Emergency-Specific Guides
Do: Have them sit upright, leaning slightly forward. Loosen tight clothing. Give aspirin (300mg) if available and no allergy.
Don't: Don't let them walk or exert themselves. Don't ignore it even if it 'feels like gas.'
Call us immediately. Time = heart muscle.
Do: F — Face: Ask them to smile. Does one side droop?
Do: A — Arms: Can they raise both arms? Does one drift down?
Do: S — Speech: Is speech slurred or strange?
Do: T — Time: Note the exact time symptoms started. Tell the doctor.
Every minute counts. Brain cells are dying.
Do: Sit them upright. Open windows for fresh air. Use inhaler if they have asthma. Loosen clothing around chest and neck.
Don't: Don't lay them flat. Don't give water if they're gasping.
If lips turn blue or they can't speak in full sentences, this is critical.
Do: Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth. Don't remove it — add more cloth on top if soaked through. Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible.
Don't: Don't use a tourniquet unless trained. Don't remove objects embedded in the wound.
Keep pressure on. Don't let go. Help is coming.
